{"id":4966,"date":"2015-12-12T19:13:10","date_gmt":"2015-12-13T00:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afutureworththinkingabout.com\/?p=4966"},"modified":"2015-12-12T19:27:04","modified_gmt":"2015-12-13T00:27:04","slug":"bbc-tech-giants-pledge-1bn-for-altruistic-ai-venture-openai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afutureworththinkingabout.com\/?p=4966","title":{"rendered":"BBC: &#8220;Tech giants pledge $1bn for &#8216;altruistic AI&#8217; venture, OpenAI&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This headline comes from a piece <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-35082344\" target=\"_blank\">over at the BBC<\/a> that opens as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Prominent tech executives have pledged $1bn (\u00a3659m) for OpenAI, a non-profit venture that aims to develop artificial intelligence (AI) to benefit humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The venture&#8217;s backers include Tesla Motors and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel, Indian tech giant Infosys and Amazon Web Services.<\/p>\n<p>Open AI says it expects its research &#8211; free from financial obligations &#8211; to focus on a &#8220;positive human impact&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have warned that advances in AI could ultimately threaten humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Musk recently told students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that AI was humanity&#8217;s &#8220;biggest existential threat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, British theoretical physicist <a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-30290540\">Stephen Hawking told the BBC<\/a> AI could potentially &#8220;re-design itself at an ever increasing rate&#8221;, superseding humans by outpacing biological evolution.<\/p>\n<p>However, other experts have argued that the risk of AI posing any threat to humans remains remote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And I think we all know <a href=\"https:\/\/afutureworththinkingabout.com\/?p=4786\" target=\"_blank\">where<\/a> I<a href=\"https:\/\/afutureworththinkingabout.com\/?p=4801\" target=\"_blank\"> stand<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/afutureworththinkingabout.com\/?p=4934\" target=\"_blank\">this issue<\/a>. The issue here is not and never has been one of what it means to create something that&#8217;s smarter than us, or how we &#8220;reign it in&#8221; or &#8220;control it.&#8221; That&#8217;s just disgusting.<\/p>\n<p>No, the issue is how we program for compassion and ethical considerations, when we&#8217;re still so very bad at it, amongst our human selves.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping an eye on this, as it develops.
